HCV2018 – ICORN Public Outreach Session
A novel component to the 2018 international Symposium was the ICORN Public Outreach Session, led by Professor Cliona O’Farrelly, a new initiative of HCV2018 which provided Irish healthcare providers and patients the opportunity to hear about and discuss developments in HCV research.
The story of the Hepatitis C virus is a two-headed Janus: on the one hand, describing the cause of devastation to so many millions of lives across the globe, remaining a hidden enemy and leading cause of liver disease, and on the other, describing a triumph for science and collaborative research. The time between discovery of the virus to a comprehensive description of its biology, to the finding of a cure, is the fastest in history. The Public Outreach Session sought to describe and celebrate these successes and how they have impacted Irish patients. It also provided the forum to discuss and debate the challenges we still face in identifying and treating people with HCV.
